Winery Pumps for Must, Lees, Pomace and Wine Transfer

Application-focused progressive cavity and centrifugal pump selection for winery products ranging from clear wine and juice to viscous, solids-bearing must and lees.

Winery Process Transfer

Match the pump to the product and the duty

Must, lees, pomace, juice, finished wine and cleaning solutions do not behave the same way. Selecting a winery pump only by connection size or motor horsepower can lead to poor flow control, product agitation, plugging, premature wear or difficult cleaning. ACCA starts with the actual fluid and system conditions.

Technology Comparison

Progressive cavity or centrifugal?

Progressive cavity pumps are commonly considered when the product is viscous, contains pumpable soft solids, requires positive-displacement flow or benefits from controlled low-speed transfer. Flow is approximately proportional to speed, subject to pressure, viscosity, wear and internal slip.

Centrifugal pumps are commonly considered for clean, low-viscosity liquids, circulation and higher-flow transfer at moderate head. Their performance follows the system curve, making correct impeller, speed and operating-point selection important.

Neither technology is automatically better for every winery process. The correct choice depends on product properties, suction conditions, required flow, discharge pressure, cleaning method and the complete operating range.

Winemaking Applications

Common winery pumping duties

Must transferJuice, skins, pulp and seeds require adequate inlet geometry and suitable operating speed.
Lees and sedimentViscosity and suction conditions can govern whether the pumping cavities fill correctly.
Juice and wineClear liquids may suit centrifugal or positive-displacement transfer depending on flow and pressure.
Pomace mixturesThe material must remain pumpable; very dry or oversized solids may require other conveying equipment.
Filtration supportPump flow and pressure must remain within the downstream filter supplier’s limits.
Tank transferVariable-speed operation can help adjust flow between different vessels and process stages.
Progressive Cavity Selection

Useful for viscous and solids-bearing winery products

A progressive cavity pump moves product through sealed cavities formed between a helical rotor and stator. The positive-displacement principle supports controlled flow over a useful pressure range and can accommodate a broad range of viscosities when the pump and inlet are sized correctly.

Inlet arrangementDesigned around viscosity and solids behavior

Centrifugal Selection

A practical choice for many clean-liquid duties

For low-viscosity juice, wine, water and compatible cleaning solutions, a centrifugal pump may provide a simple and economical transfer option. Selection should confirm the required flow and total dynamic head rather than relying on pipe diameter alone.

Specify sanitary and food-contact requirements

“Food grade,” “sanitary” and “CIP capable” are configuration-specific terms and should not be assumed from the pump type. Identify any required sanitary fittings, documented surface finish, food-contact elastomer compliance, stainless-steel wetted components, drainability and cleaning procedure before quotation.

ACCA can review available configurations against the information supplied. The winery and its process engineer remain responsible for validating the selected equipment against facility standards, cleaning validation and applicable regulations.

Replacement pump or parts request

For an installed pump, include the nameplate, manufacturer and model, serial number when available, current speed, operating duty and photos of the connections and base. For parts, add any rotor, stator, seal or assembly numbers.

ACCA Support

Pumps and replacement components

ACCA supplies progressive cavity pumps, centrifugal pumps and progressive cavity pump replacement parts for industrial applications. Our objective is to identify a practical configuration based on the product, process duty, materials and installation—not simply substitute a model number without reviewing the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Winery pump questions

Can one pump handle must, lees and finished wine?

Possibly, but the full operating range, solids, cleaning requirements and connections must be checked. A pump optimized for thick lees may not be the most efficient choice for every clean-liquid transfer.

Are progressive cavity pumps low shear?

They are commonly selected for controlled, relatively low-shear positive-displacement transfer. Actual product impact depends on pump size, speed, geometry, system restrictions and operation.

Can ACCA provide sanitary or food-contact configurations?

Available materials and configurations vary. State the required material certificates, elastomer compliance, surface finish, fittings and cleaning method so ACCA can determine whether an appropriate configuration is available.

What information is needed for a replacement pump or parts?

Provide the existing manufacturer and model, serial number when available, nameplate and installation photos, current duty, product, flow, pressure, temperature, materials and known component numbers.

Need a winery-process pump?

Send the product, flow, pressure, solids, viscosity, temperature, cleaning requirements or existing pump nameplate.
