Technical overview: This article discusses how progressive cavity pump technology is used across marine fluid-handling systems. For application selection, operating data and ACCA’s dedicated marine application pages, see Progressive Cavity Pumps for Marine Applications.
The marine industry depends on robust and efficient fluid handling systems to support vessel operations, wastewater management, fuel transfer, and cargo handling. Due to harsh operating conditions at sea, pumps used in marine applications must be durable, corrosion-resistant, and capable of handling fluids with varying viscosities and solids content.
Progressive cavity pumps provide smooth, consistent positive-displacement flow and are used in marine applications including fuel transfer, bilge and sludge handling, wastewater treatment, chemical dosing and cargo transfer.
Fuel and Oil Transfer
Ships require reliable fuel and oil transfer systems. Progressive cavity pumps can handle diesel, heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil and other viscous liquids while providing controlled flow. Selection should account for viscosity at actual operating and startup temperatures, differential pressure, suction conditions and material compatibility.
Bilge, Sludge and Waste Oil
Bilge mixtures can contain oil, water, sludge and suspended debris. Progressive cavity pumps are useful where variable viscosity and solids make controlled positive-displacement transfer desirable. Pump speed, solids characteristics, elastomer compatibility and available suction conditions should be evaluated for the actual duty.
Marine Wastewater and Sewage
Marine wastewater systems may handle sewage, blackwater and sludge with variable solids content. Progressive cavity pumps can provide low-pulsation transfer and useful solids handling when properly selected for particle size, concentration, pressure and inlet conditions.
Chemical Dosing
Progressive cavity pumps can also provide controlled feed for selected viscous or shear-sensitive treatment chemicals. Chemical compatibility of the stator, seals and wetted metals must be checked against the actual formulation, concentration and temperature.
Cargo and Viscous Liquid Transfer
Marine cargo and service systems may require transfer of crude oil, edible oils, molasses, chemicals and other viscous products. Progressive cavity technology can be appropriate where low-pulsation flow, viscosity handling and controlled delivery are priorities.
Selecting the Right Marine Pump
No single pump technology is best for every shipboard service. Progressive cavity pumps are particularly strong for viscous, solids-bearing and controlled-flow duties; clean low-viscosity water services may be better served by other pump technologies. For PCP selection, provide flow, pressure, viscosity range, temperature, solids information, suction conditions, duty cycle and installation constraints.
