Progressive Cavity Pump Maximum Particle Size – Solids Handling Selection Guide
The smallest acceptable pumping element is partly determined by the maximum particle size or solid that must pass through the pump.
This reference organizes the maximum particle-size data used in progressive cavity pump selection for L-Frame, 2000 Series and 1000 Series pumping elements.
How Particle Size Affects Element Selection
Before correcting a progressive cavity pump for abrasion, viscosity, pressure or horsepower, first determine whether the selected pumping element can physically accommodate the largest expected solid. The maximum particle size in the fluid establishes a minimum element size.
Selection Rule
Select an element whose published maximum particle size is equal to or greater than the largest particle expected in the pumped fluid. Then continue the selection process for abrasion, viscosity, stages, operating speed, drive end and horsepower.

Worked Example: Raw Sewage with 0.2-Inch Solids
In the selection example, the maximum particle size is 0.2 inch and a Moyno 2000 pump has already been selected. The smallest element available in the 2000 product line is the 008 element. Its published particle-size capability is greater than the required 0.2 inch, so particle size does not force selection of a larger element.
The selection then continues to the next step: checking whether abrasion and viscosity require a larger pumping element or lower operating speed.
Particle Size Is Only One Solids-Handling Criterion
A particle that can physically pass through a pumping element may still create abrasion, plugging or inlet problems depending on particle shape, hardness, concentration, fluid velocity and solids loading. Particle-size capability should therefore be used as a minimum element-size screen rather than as a complete solids-handling guarantee.
The pump suction configuration must also be appropriate for the material being handled. Highly viscous or difficult-to-feed materials may require an open-throat or other specialized inlet arrangement even when individual particles are within the pumping element’s size capability.
