Why progressive cavity pumps fit screw press feed

A screw press operates continuously, so the feed pump should provide predictable flow across the equipment operating range. A VFD-driven progressive cavity pump allows sludge delivery to follow changing plant flow, solids concentration and dewatering performance.

Controlled feed

Positive displacement provides predictable capacity across the operating range.

Variable speed

VFD control allows sludge flow to track screw press throughput.

Viscous sludge

Suitable for many thickened sludge streams when correctly sized and supplied.

Low pulsation

Smooth delivery supports stable continuous loading of the dewatering equipment.

Pump Selection

Match pump flow to screw press capacity

The pump should cover minimum through maximum feed at practical operating speeds. Selecting solely for peak flow can result in excessive speed or poor turndown at normal conditions.

FlowMinimum, normal & maximum feed
SolidsConcentration & variability
ViscosityThickened sludge consistency
PressurePiping + press feed losses
SuctionPipe geometry & available NPSH
TurndownRequired VFD operating range
Conditioning

Coordinate sludge and polymer feed

Polymer dosage and sludge flow both affect floc formation, filtrate quality and cake solids. Once conditioned, the system should minimize unnecessary shear before sludge enters the press.

Polymer metering

Coordinated polymer and sludge feed helps maintain consistent conditioning as press throughput changes.

Pump Size & Reliability

A larger pump at lower speed may be the better selection

Overspeeding a small PCP can increase wear and worsen suction limitations. For abrasive or highly viscous sludge, a larger pump operating more slowly may improve inlet performance and component life, depending on pressure and installation constraints.

Rotor, stator & protection

Rotor surface and stator elastomer should match sludge chemistry, temperature and abrasive characteristics.

  • Discharge-pressure protection
  • Dry-run protection
  • Motor overload protection
  • VFD speed limits

Screw press vs. belt press and filter press feed

Screw and belt presses generally require stable continuous feed. Filter press duty differs because discharge pressure typically rises substantially as its batch cycle progresses. Pump sizing and controls should therefore match the specific dewatering technology.
