Progressive Cavity Filter Press Feed Pumps

Controlled positive-displacement feed for filter presses where flow decreases and discharge pressure rises as the filter cake develops.

Wastewater sludge dewatering and filter press feed application
Filter press feed is a changing-duty application: pressure rises as cake resistance increases through the filtration cycle.

Why progressive cavity pumps fit filter press feed

Filter press service differs from ordinary sludge transfer. The pump must accommodate relatively high initial flow at lower pressure and progressively lower flow as press resistance and discharge pressure increase.

Controlled feed

Positive displacement provides predictable sludge delivery through the press cycle.

Pressure capability

Appropriate staged PCP designs can develop pressure as the filter cake builds.

Viscous sludge

Suitable for many conditioned and thickened sludge streams when correctly selected.

Variable speed

VFD control allows feed rate to decrease as press resistance increases.

Operating Cycle

Size for both ends of the filter press cycle

At the beginning of filtration, the empty press generally accepts higher flow at lower pressure. As solids accumulate, cake resistance increases, required pressure rises and desired feed rate usually falls. Selecting around one design point can miss the most demanding part of the cycle.

Process Control

Variable-speed filter press feeding

A VFD can reduce pump speed as filter press pressure rises, transitioning from higher initial filling flow toward lower finishing flow. The control strategy should be coordinated with the press operating requirements and sludge characteristics.

Sludge conditioning & polymer

Polymer dosage can affect floc formation, filtrate quality, cake release and dewatering rate. Excessive shear between conditioning and the press can damage floc structure.

Suction & Wear

Thick sludge changes both inlet performance and wear

Short, generously sized inlet piping with minimal restrictions helps thickened sludge reach and fill the pump cavities. Solids concentration, consistency, available NPSH, bridging and entrained air should be reviewed before establishing pump size and speed.

Rotor & stator life

Abrasive solids, differential pressure and rotor speed influence wear. Rotor surface and stator elastomer should be selected for the actual sludge chemistry, temperature and abrasive characteristics.
