Progressive Cavity Pumps for Wastewater Treatment
Application engineering for sludge transfer, activated sludge, digestion, dewatering, polymer feed and abrasive chemical slurries.

One pump principle, many very different fluids
Wastewater treatment plants move activated sludge, thickened sludge, polymers, lime slurry and conditioned solids through processes whose viscosity and solids concentration can change substantially. Progressive cavity pumps are useful in many of these services because they provide controlled positive-displacement flow and can handle viscous, solids-bearing and shear-sensitive fluids when properly selected.
Useful for sludge streams that become difficult to move as solids concentration increases.
Progressing cavities can transport many suspended and soft solids with appropriate inlet design.
Applicable to polymers, conditioned sludge and biological streams where excessive agitation is undesirable.
Capacity is approximately proportional to speed, supporting VFD process control and turndown.

How to select a wastewater progressive cavity pump
The same pump should not be selected for every wastewater stream. Reliable sizing starts with the complete operating envelope and the physical behavior of the fluid.
Rotor, stator and materials considerations
The rotor and stator form the pumping elements of a PCP, and their materials and operating conditions strongly affect service life. Abrasive wastewater may favor conservative speed and suitable rotor surface treatment, while stator elastomer selection should reflect actual chemistry, temperature and cleaning exposure. For maintenance and replacement programs, see ACCA’s progressive cavity pump parts resources and supported Moyno-compatible replacement parts.
Protect positive-displacement equipment
PCPs require appropriate discharge-pressure protection. Prolonged dry running should also be prevented because the pumped fluid lubricates and cools the rotor/stator interface.
- Pressure monitoring or relief
- Dry-run protection
- Motor overload protection
- VFD operating limits
