Axial-Flow Pumps
ACCA axial-flow and propeller pumps are engineered for very high flow at comparatively low head, making them a strong fit for drainage, flood control, irrigation, river water and other large-volume water systems.
Axial-Flow Pump Engineering Range
Flow
Axial-flow hydraulic coverage extends approximately from 1,700 to 27,000 GPM for very-high-capacity water movement.
Head
Typical axial-flow duties are approximately 10–30 ft of head, with published capability up to about 30 ft (13 psi).
Power
Large installations can require drivers up to approximately 1,000 HP.
Temperature
Published water-service capability extends up to approximately 205°F (93°C), subject to the materials, bearings and complete pump configuration.
Configurations & Lubrication
Axial-flow pumps can be arranged with above- or below-ground discharge-head configurations. Lineshaft/bearing systems can be designed for water or oil lubrication according to the application. Driver choices include electric motors, steam turbines, diesel engines and gear drives.
The propeller produces primarily axial velocity, so these pumps are most effective where capacity is very high and the system does not require the head produced by a conventional multistage turbine.
Construction & Materials
Typical construction can use Class 30 cast-iron suction components, Bronze 844 bowl bearings and impellers, 316/416 stainless-steel shafting, Bronze 844 oil bearings and A36 carbon-steel column/discharge-head fabrication. Options include nickel-aluminum bronze, Bronze 844, 316 stainless steel, ductile iron and Class 30 cast iron.
Material selection is especially important for seawater, mine water and corrosive industrial service. The metallurgy should be matched to the actual water chemistry rather than selected from application name alone.
Applications
Flood Control & Drainage
Rapid movement of large water volumes at low static and friction head.
River & Surface Water
Intake and transfer from rivers, canals and other bodies of water.
Wastewater & Dewatering
Selected high-volume services where solids passage and hydraulic configuration are appropriate.
Agriculture
Irrigation and drainage systems requiring high flow with relatively low lift.
Seawater & Aquaculture
Fish farms and desalination-related water movement when corrosion-resistant construction is specified.
Industrial Water
Cooling-water circulation and other large-volume plant services.
Technical Selection Guidance
Axial-flow pump selection is highly sensitive to the complete system curve. Provide required flow, static lift, friction losses, minimum and maximum water levels, intake geometry, sump dimensions, liquid, temperature, solids and driver information. Selection should verify the operating range, minimum submergence, NPSH, power demand and intake conditions to avoid vortexing and unstable operation.
